Always be prepared for the unexpected when heading out solo on the water. Pack these essentials in a drybag, even for short trips: a water bottle, 10-20L drybag, headlamp, small first aid kit, fire starter kit, snacks (plus extras), sunscreen/lip balm, cellphone (in a waterproof case), compass and chart (or GPS if you know how to use it), small tarp or emergency blanket, knife, and extra warm layers. Stay safe and enjoy your adventure!
To stay cozy and safe while winter paddleboarding, dress for the water temperature. A drysuit with warm layers underneath is ideal. If you don’t have one, a 5mm+ wetsuit paired with rain gear or extra layers works too. Don’t forget your PFD, a warm hat, mitts or gloves, and neoprene booties or socks. Bundle up and enjoy your winter adventure!
For summer paddleboarding, think about the water temperature and conditions. If you’re paddling in the ocean (water temp <20°C), go for neoprene booties or water shoes, a drysuit or wetsuit with extra layers, and don’t forget gloves, a hat, sunglasses, a buff, and some dry layers. For warmer lake or calm water paddling (water temp >20°C), a swimsuit, quick-dry workout clothes, a long-sleeve layer, and a rain jacket will do the trick. Oh, and always pack those extras—gloves, hat, sunglasses, and a buff—for a comfy day on the water!
If you’re new to SUP, start in calm waters with little to no wind. Lakes, ponds, sheltered coves, and slow-moving rivers are perfect. Look for easy launch spots—sandy beaches are ideal, but gentle slopes work too. Ask locals for beginner-friendly spots, check with rental shops, or join a local Facebook group for tips. Avoid areas with strong currents, waves, or winds over 20 km/h. Pro tip: Use the "Windy" app to check local wind and wave conditions before heading out!
